AZA 2012 - Re-scripting Architecture

Re-evaluating the Role of Architectural Practice

As a profession, architecture is relatively young. It had an easy birth into a structured system of gentility and patronage where the demands on it were simple: to make beautiful objects imbued with commonly held, albeit elitist, cultural capital. The growth of society under capitalism has added complexity to the discipline, demanding functional and spatial efficiency – along with the belief that architecture can also solve social problems.

The South African Institute of Architects in partnership with the Cape Town Institute for Architecture and Architecture ZA.NOW is proud to announce the AZA2012 Biennial Festival. This follows on the first and hugely successful AZA2010 Biennial Festival which was held in September 2010 in Newtown Johannesburg. The Architecture ZA 2010 was Africa's first and largest premier urban culture festival as it brought together leading-edge thinkers and multi- disciplinary practitioners in the built environment from around the globe.

AZA2012 supports the Cape Town 2014 World Design Capital and we are proud to be one of the events counting down to the 2014 spectacle.
